In our last two Evolution videos, we looked at themes that have carried through the franchise. The first was the "Warrior of Light" motif, and the second was the "Four Fiends". For our third video, we've decided to change things up a bit, as we're now going to be looking at Gilgamesh, specifically how and the concepts around his character have changed with each installment he's appeared in.
Gilgamesh was first introduced alongside his sidekick Enkidu as an antagonist in Final Fantasy V and he was heavily inspired by Benkei, as well as The Epic of Gilgamesh. Such was his impact, thanks to things like the Battle on the Big Bridge, that he has since appeared in a whole host of other games. In Final Fantasy 8, he was a Guardian Force, he had retroactive appearances in Final Fantasy I, The After Years and VI Advance and he's also appeared under various guises in Final Fantasy 9, 11, 12, 13-2, 14 and 15! And that's before even getting onto the copious amounts of spin-off appearances (like Type-0).
We hope you enjoy this Gilgamesh Documentary, as we look into how the concept of Gilgamesh has evolved over time, with full explanations! :D
