The Continuation of Opening Week
The O's continue their Opening Week against their division rivals, the Boston Red Sox
What started as just another series in the American League has continued to heat up, until the Boston Red Sox can no longer deny the pressure put on them by the Baltimore Orioles. With a recent surge of new talent, these showdowns have drawn more and more attention from fans and sportscasters.
Intertwined history leading to an intense rivalry:
Ever since the Orioles came to Baltimore in 1954, they've had a friendly rivalry with the Boston Red Sox. The two franchises have listed some of the greatest players in the American League on their rosters, legends like Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, and Jim Palmer. In the 1970s, the rivalry between the two teams really cranked up a notch, with both teams snagging American League pennants. While the tension died down during the next few decades as the teams struggled under poor management and superstitious curses, a renewed vitality has surged through both the Red Sox and the Orioles. In fact, in recent years some pundits say that the Orioles are a better competitor for the Boston Red Sox than their long-time nemesis, the New York Yankees.
