Even when I did my crucifix video a year or so ago, I wasn't sure if the crucifix was actively working if it was in your hand. While I know waving it at the ghost won't do a dang thing - if the crucifix is being held by a player, does the game treat it like it's placed on the floor? Based on this video, I'd say yes! I suspected that was the case before, and now I know for certain, it does!

I don't know if I'd say it's better to hold it than to place it though as you may be tempted to swap from it to something else or move out of the range of the ghost thus giving it an opening to start a hunt.
