1With the recent announcement that The Cycle Frontier will be shutting down its servers at the end of september 2023, I decided to take this last chance to give it a review. In summary, the Cycle Frontier is an absolute blast!
This free-to-play first-person extraction shooter drops you onto one of 3 maps with up to 17 other players to compete for the limited resources while trying to complete your own missions. Select the loadout of weapons, armour and utilities you can afford to run, and are willing to wager losing, as you drop to the planet to fight off the other contractors and tackle the alien creators. The maps are stunning and treacherous, and just large enough to balance exploration and action.
The gunplay in The Cycle Frontier is top-notch. It's a skill-based experience with a longer time-to-kill, demanding precision and adaptability. The arsenal of weapons and gear at your disposal is impressive, facilitating different playstyles and allowing for versatile combat approaches. Will you hide in the bushes, or go loud? Get up close with an SMG, or fight at range with one of the sniper rifles?
If you survive long enough to extract off the planet, you can spend your newly earned credits and resources to improve your loadout. If you dont survive, you lose pretty much everything you went in with. It's high risk, high reward.
All in all, this game had incredible potential, but endemic issues with game design and the quest for monetisation prevented it from properly getting off the ground. That said, in its current state, it is still a fantastic game, and this may be your last chance to play it, so if the servers are still up when you're watching this, why not give it a go before its too late?
I give this game 86 percent.
