The Descent has nothing to do with the movie, but it does live up to its name with you moving deeper into a mine. The story unfolds through various newspaper clippings, and notes strewn around the mines. The game relies very heavily on jump scares, which weren't very effective at scaring me. I think they're well done, they just don't really do it for me.
The atmosphere of the mine is top notch, it feels claustrophobic and as if it might collapse at any moment. There are lots of creepy things happening in the mines that will make you paranoid, and anxious as you move around corners.
Sound and music design falls in the ambient zone, and it's perfect in all the ways it needs to be. The sound of the mine crumbling around you, this constant sound that makes you feel as if someone or something is in the mines with you. It's very unnerving.
Gameplay itself is very much a walking sim, though the pacing is excellent so I never once felt like I was moving too slow. You'll search for items to unlock doors or use objects, read notes, and that's the primary gameplay loop. There are no real puzzles, just things you need to do in order to progress. The mine is very well made so it's unlikely you'll get too lost at any given time.
Overall it was a fantastic experience as both a horror game and an adventure exploring the mystery of missing miners.
