"Proper" difficulty in games is one of the most oft argued about topics in game design, and everyone seems to have their own opinion on how best to implement satisfying difficulty in their favorite games and genres.

Immensely popular game critics like Egoraptor, JonTron, Extra Credits, Super Bunnyhop, and more have all offered their take on proper difficulty design, and yet the war rages on in the comments and elsewhere on the internet. Accusations of "artificial difficulty" are flung with abandon, and curses wished upon too many mothers to count.

How is it that this ONE critical concept has drawn so much ire from the gaming community, and how are there so many different conceptions of "proper" difficulty design?

This video critically examines some of the most commonly held opinions on game difficulty in the hopes of answering some of these questions.
