The Entire History Of Every Single NIGHTFALL System In Destiny 2 (2017- 2021)
A Video Showing The Entire History Of Every Single NIGHTFALL System In Destiny 2 (2017- 2021)
All footage was mine mostly solo but some team play too. This video is 1 of a kind, no one has documented the entire history on nightfall's in 1 whole video. Took some time to make, but thanks for your support :)
Timeline:
2017 - 2018 February.
Game Launches with two clear cut nightfall modes normal/prestige.
Nightfall's have set modifiers for each nightfall with a timer clocking down. If timer ends you return to orbit. Some unique mods were used such as vex rings/killing time and torrent for ability usage. These Nightfall's by nature were tough and relied on smart movement and some add skipping at times. Prestige Nightfall's in particular till this day were the toughest I've ever experienced, yes more then GM's.
2018 Feb - May
After Curse Of Osiris DLC during late February the nightfall system changed by reversing the timer to count upwards. There would be no returning to orbit due to time. However time now would impact your score. Scored nightfall's for me were at the pinnacle because there was balance between time efficiency and getting your score in the allotted time. The Nightfall challenge card released giving the player power to choose their own mods. Heavyweight and such were not on the card at launch. This system was the best, however the next update would ruin nightfall's for over a year.
2018 May - 2019 October
Nightfall system relatively stayed the same with some minor adjustments to multiplier scores during this period. We still had prestige/normal with scoring however new mods were added to the nightfall challenge card. This was HEAVYWEIGHT/Grenadier/Brawler which turned boss's in to easy mode. At the beginning it was fun to solo 1 phase boss's which previously took a fireteam of 3 to melt a prestige nightfall boss without heavyweight. This spurred speed runners on to complete nightfall's as fast as possible competing for WR times. I myself enjoyed this as well. After time though things needed to change.
2019 October - 2020 April
Shadow keep Introduces Ordeal nightfall's which there would be now multiple difficulties. Adept/hero/legend and master which varied in mods. The main mechanic was now champions which had there own tier system giving platinum/gold/silver rewards depending on how many champions were killed. Thus ensuring players do not skip encounters. Score was a mechanic but just for extra rewards i.e. pinnacle rewards. The champion mods unstoppable/overload anti barrier would rotate seasonally so players would have to rotate their loadout to ensure PVE meta is balanced.
2020 April - Currently.
No major changes a few champions were adjusted I.e. anti barrier rounds as appose to initially. Other then that the exact same but with a higher level mode called Grandmasters. This difficulty would have a bunch of negative modifiers and utilize the contest modifier for every GM. A new title was added also called conqueror which resets every season and now has a gild as well.
My thoughts are in the video however having played every single nightfall system extensively I can honestly say that the sweet spot between 2018 Feb - May before Warmind released was the best balance and we had exclusive strike loot then as well. Heavyweight ruined it really which they should have just removed from near the start and applied exact restrictions for loot. So you must get 100K for a chance at any loot, 150k grants unknown rewards etc. Champions are a great additive but the way we deal with them is still not there because of bungies obsession with seasonal mods. Destiny isn't meant to be played seasonally it's meant to be played ongoing and a ever evolving game.
