The first season of "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" made for extremely good entertainment and functioned more as an extended movie rather than a real series. Honestly I never cared about Sam Wilson / Falcon (Anthony Mackie) but this series forced me to and I am genuinely rooting for his future now.

Sam is internally struggling with taking the mantle of Captain America after the events of "Avengers: Endgame" (2019), which is what Steve wanted for him. We also follow the former HYDRA assassin known as the Winter Soldier but now turned humble citizen Bucky (Sebastian Stan) who has been pardoned of all his past crimes whilst operating under his forced alias. The two of them reluctantly team up to stop a terrorist activist group known as the Flagsmashers who wants to create a better, more equal post-Blip society, and the group is led by Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman), a troubled young person who has injected the Super Soldier Serum in herself and some of her followers. Since Sam won't take on the mantle of Captain American, a new one is selected; and his name is John Walker (Wyatt Russell).

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was leagues better than I expected. I had heard from Marvel fans that this one was a dud, but now I'm thinking they've just eaten too well and have forgotten how blessed they are to get content of this high quality and level consistently. I enjoyed that this one was taken dead serious and rarely went into goofy town, as the MCU so commonly does in their media. There is some pretty heavy drama and emotional weight in this series and that is the best part about it to me.

There were obviously some things I didn't like, like Karli and her Flag Smashers, they were just kinda lame and generic to me despite an otherwise interesting motive and storyline. There was far too much racial commentary and references in this, it's as if the writers needed to remind the audience that Sam was black every 5 minutes in case we had forgotten. You might expect me to criticize John Walker, but he was actually a standout and made for some very fun scenes so I have no problems there. Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) completely stole the show whenever he was speaking, but the other cameo character Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) did not, and I found her fate to be extremely predictable yet her involvement in this series unnecessary.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is a bright spot in the MCU and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. As I said before, it functions more as an extended film instead of a real TV series, so keep that expectation in mind.
