Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for the end of The Girlfriend.
One of the highlights of The Girlfriend on Prime Video is the push and pull between its two leading characters. Cherry (Olivia Cooke) is a working class woman who meets Daniel (Laurie Davidson), a somewhat pampered son of two rich and influential people, and begins dating him. When Daniel brings Cherry home to meet his parents, the vibes are instantly wrong with Laura (Robin Wright), Daniel's mother. It's soon revealed that Daniel and Laura are close, really close. Their relationship is undoubtedly unhealthy, especially after Laura lost her daughter at a young age, and when Cherry comes bursting into their lives, Laura becomes overprotective and then outright combative.
The final moments of the episode play out in a devastating fashion after a whole season of Cherry and Laura ramping up attacks against each other. From Laura destroying Cherry's career and getting her fired to Cherry smashing a bottle on her head and lying that it was Laura, the two women go for the jugular each time they clash. It was inevitable that the end would be disastrous. We sat down with Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke and discussed playing the two sides of their character, how they found their character, questions Cooke still has for her character in the future, and how the TV landscape has changed for Wright since her days in House of Cards. While it's unlikely we'll see Laura any time soon after her death, the open-ended finale of The Girlfriend does suggest there's more story to tell, though we have no confirmation of a renewal just yet.
