About Pokémon Sword & Shield:
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are role-playing video games developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokemon Company and Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. They are the first installments in the eighth generation of the Pokemon video game series and the second in the series to be released on a home game console, after Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!. Announced in February 2019, Pokemon Sword and Shield were released on November 15, 2019.
Sword and Shield's development began immediately following the completion of Pokemon Sun and Moon in 2016. As with most other main series Pokemon games, they chronicle the main character's journey in the Galar region, based on Great Britain, alongside rivals Hop, Bede and Marnie aiming to dethrone the Pokemon League Champion Leon and defeat Team Yell, a group of fans obsessed over Marnie. Sword and Shield introduce several new features such as Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing, functions that increase size and change forms of certain Pokemon; the Wild Area, a large open world with free camera movement; and raids with co-op battling; along with the addition of 81 new Pokemon and 13 regional variants of preexisting Pokemon. They also reintroduce features previously seen in Sun and Moon and Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, such as regional variants and roaming Pokemon depicted in the overworld.
Sword and Shield received generally positive reviews from critics with particular praise towards the design, new features such as Dynamaxing, and an emphasis on simplicity and streamlined encounters, although some criticized the smaller Pokédex and a lack of polish or overall substance.
