The Hardcore Retro God (Review #53 - U.N. Squadron)
"The fighting in this area is ferocious. Only fate will determine if we live or die. Only a madman would take on this mission... Lucky they found me!" God help us if these words don't ring a bell even after 27 years...either way, here I am back at it with yet another Season 5 entry following a brutal 5-month hiatus.
By now, everyone remembers this early 16-bit CAPCOM shmup, right? A direct port of its parent arcade counterpart released 2 years prior (same year as Strider, Willow, Final Fight, & Dynasty Wars), this originated in Japan under the title of 'Area 88', based on a [semi-obscure] manganime conceived by Kaoru Shintani. It revolved around the exploits of 3 mercenary pilots - Shin Kazama (風間 真), Mickey Simon & Greg Gates, hailing from Japan, our ol' US of A and Denmark, respectively - and their intent on thwarting the efforts of a terrorist group known as "PROJECT 4" headquartered in their base within the Kingdom of Arslan.
But be forewarned - DON'T EXPECT THIS GAME TO KISS YOUR ASS. More to come: Solar Striker & Daedalian Opus (Game Boy); Mazin Saga Mutant Fighter (Genesis); Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (NES); ExoSquad (Genesis); Streets of Rage 1, 2 & 3 (Genesis / Game Gear for 1&2); Zombies Ate My Neighbors (Super NES / Genesis); The Tower of Druaga (Famicom), and MORE.
Excuse the inconsistent speed and/or tone of my speech, on which I'm doing everything in my power to improve; but at least the intro's much shorter unlike last time (HAPPY NOW, RANDOM UNSUSPECTING VIEWERS?! Also, forgive my confrontational nature).
Take note, I'll block someone WITHOUT ANY HESITATION / REGRETS / SECOND THOUGHTS if a single complaint makes its way underneath.
