The book is pretty clear what happens in the story. The makers of this film decided to stray from the actual story whenever they could. Basically, it is a story about a Hobbit, and the adventures he was with a group of dwarves. Instead, Middle Earth was turned into an amusement park. There were things that happened in the movie that nobody could survive without injury or death, so believability went right out the window very early on. Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of great things about this movie. It was filled with eye candy. The scenes with Gollum was good, and it was somewhat satisfying to see the mishap with the three trolls, but they didn't really give the actors much of a chance. This film misses a lot of the dialogue in the book, which defines the characters. Also, half of the dwarves didn't even look like dwarves. They looked like men. If the movie would have made me happy, I would have seen it again. Instead, I'll wait for part 2, and for the whole mess to come out on dvd. Seeing it in 3D was cool. Peter Jackson pulled a Tim Burton on this movie. Maybe it was what the movie company wanted, to make it all seem like a video game. As a fan of the book, all I wanted was for them to tell the story. Apparently, that is impossible these days.
