The incident became known in Turkey as Çuval Olayı (the Hood event)

Why exactly the Turkish forces were so far from home remains a mystery but the Turkish government, having fought a multi-decade insurgency against the Kurds would have had a keen interest in knowing what was going on in Northern Iraq in the wake of the US led invasion but you can easily imagine them doing “special forces things” to ensure the Kurds in Iraq didn’t help the Kurdish rebels in Turkey.

This thinking is backed up by the fact that three months earlier, U.S. troops arrested a group of Turkish soldiers clad in civilian clothes who were escorting a cargo of weapons hidden in an aid convoy bound for Kirkuk.

Both sides at the time agreed to hush up that incident.
