Barry White credited an Elvis song for changing the course of his life: while jailed for four months at the age of 16 for stealing $30,000 worth of Cadillac tires (equivalent to about $290,000 now) he listened to Elvis Presley singing "It's Now or Never" on the radio, an experience he later said inspired him to try to take up singing.

Overweight for most of his adult life and reportedly smoking as many as 150 cigarettes a day his health began to collapse in the 1990s and he nearly died from a stroke brought on by extremely high blood pressure in 1995. By 2002 he was on regular dialysis and awaiting a kidney transplant but suffered another major, debilitating stroke that ended his chances of receiving that transplant. He died in hospital on July 4th from cardiac arrest.
