Walter Rohrl's LANCIA DELTA S4 Group B at the EA SPORTS WRC Rally CORSICA

The The Lancia Delta S4 is a racing car built by the Italian company Lancia in conjunction with Abarth, homologated as a Group B car and designed to compete in the World Rally Championship. It was developed in 1984 based on the Lancia Delta model, first marketed in 1979, and participated only in the 1985 and 1986 seasons of the World Rally Championship. In its first year, it debuted in the final round of the calendar, the Rally of Great Britain, where it achieved an unexpected one-two finish with drivers Henri Toivonen and Markku Alén.

Timo Salonen's Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 dominated the 1985 world championship. Lancia competed with the Rally 037, a vehicle that coexisted with the S4 that year and the following year. Once the S4 was developed and homologated, the brand entered two units in the Rally of Great Britain: one for Markku Alén, a Finnish driver who had raced with the team since 1978, and another for Henri Toivonen, a young driver also of Nordic origin who had debuted with the team in 1984. [36] The event was held between November 24 and 28 with a route of sixty-five stages that amounted to a total of 896.98 km timed. [37] The intention of the Italian team was to see the real behavior in the race and serve as preparation for the following season. In addition to the Delta S4, the MG Metro 6R4 also debuted, driven by Tony Pond and Malcolm Wilson. The favorites for the race were not the Lancia drivers, but those of Peugeot and Audi. Timo Salonen, already champion, and Karl Grundel were entered in Peugeot Turbo 16 Evo IIs, replacing Ari Vatanen, who suffered an accident at the Rally Argentina. Audi, meanwhile, entered Hannu Mikkola and Walter Röhrl, both in their Audi Sport Quatro S1s, the latter featuring a sequential automatic transmission as a new feature that the brand wanted to test. At the start of the race, Markku Alén set the best time on the first two stages and took the lead, pursued by Hannu Mikkola, Timo Salonen and Toivonen, who was more cautious in the early stages of the race and preferred not to take risks. The first stage ended with Alén in the lead, but closely followed by Mikkola. On the second day, the Audi driver managed to overtake him, but electrical problems with his vehicle caused him to lose the lead, which once again fell to the Lancia driver. At that moment, both Peugeot drivers had retired on the same stage: Salonen with a broken engine and Grundel due to a track exit. The third stage began with Alén leading without any problems, followed by his teammate Toivonen and Pond, who managed to climb to third place in his Metro 6R4 thanks to his consistency. However, in one of the final stages, Alén overshot a bend, hit a bank, and rolled off the road into a mud puddle. He tried to get his car back on the road, but his efforts were in vain. Just when it seemed that the Finn would have to retire, his compatriot Juha Kankkunen appeared, pulling Alén's car with his Toyota Celica Twin Cam Turbo and managing to get him back into the race. This action earned the Toyota driver a reprimand from his team principal, Ove Andersson. However, due to his advantage, Kankkunen's position was almost assured due to the advantage over his immediate follower, McRae, and the impossibility of catching his predecessor, the Audi of Per Eklund. Despite returning to the race, Alén lost the lead, allowing his teammate to take the lead. Toivonen took advantage of the advantage and held on to take the win. The Italian team achieved an unexpected one-two finish with Henri Toivonen at the top of the podium, giving the Delta S4 its first international victory and returning to victory at the event where it had won five years earlier. Lancia's result foreshadowed an intense fight for the championship for the following season between the Delta S4, the 205 T16, and the Audi Quattro.
