EA SPORTS WRC is here, and this time we have the rarest and most unique cars in the game, including the Hilman Avenger, which was the first car Colin McLaren drove in a rally in England, achieving his first victory. We also have the Ford Escort Mk6 maxi kit car, a unique car that we saw in the timed stages of the rally in Spain driven by Daniel Alonso. This game includes the McLaren R4, the prototype created by Colin McLaren based on a tubular chassis and inspired by a Ford Ka, a car that was intended to be one of the best in the WRC world rally championship. Among the fastest cars in the game are the WRC 2.0 cars, the Subaru Impreza STI 22b, the icon of WORLD RALLY CARS, and the only 2-door Subaru Impreza. We also have the SEAT CÓRDOBA WRC, the Spanish icon of the World Rally Championship. We also have the fastest EA SPORTS WRC car, the 2017 VW POLO WRC, the car that never raced in real life, with mind-blowing aerodynamics and the best car for WRC rallies. There's also the Mitsubishi Galant VR4 Group A, Mitsubishi's first car before the EVO and after the Group B series.
McRae R4: the rally champion's dream car. Based on a Ford Ka, the legendary Scottish driver set out to create a rally machine as devastating and efficient on all terrains as a WRC car, but also far removed from any official brand project and with a fraction of its budget. The R4 was the result, a fruit that he unfortunately couldn't enjoy as he wished due to his untimely death in September 2007.
The story begins in 2003, when Colin McRae visited the DJM Motorsport workshops, where their specialists were finishing preparing their magnificent Escort MkII for rallying. Upon arrival, the driver was captivated by a project based on a small Ford Ka, which had been widened and fitted with the legendary Cosworth engine from the Escort and Sierra. A total of 305 horsepower and 515 Newton-meters. Afterward, he engaged in a relaxed conversation with those responsible about how difficult it was to navigate the various contractual obligations of driving for a factory manufacturer in the world championship. In short, how liberating it would be to drive a project without these constraints and at the most affordable price possible.
DJM had already laid the groundwork for the project with that Ford Ka, and all they needed was the help of an experienced rally driver to fine-tune it, so they joined the project immediately. Based on this, they built a tubular steel chassis, to which they later added improvements in all aspects: mechanics, brakes, suspension, transmission, etc. The bodywork was designed by the well-known video game developer Codemasters, although the real work was in bringing those panels from the virtual world to the real world. In total, it took the team around 18 months to complete all the work. The transmission would be via a manual or semi-automatic gearbox and could be ordered in two- or four-wheel drive format, in this case with an active center differential. As for the engines, they were planned to be offered in two variants: a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder used in lower competition categories, with 355 horsepower, and a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6. Finally, for financial reasons, the decision was made to use the first one. The world premiere of the first working prototype was reserved for the 2006 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The team had to move quickly, and the body panels were completed just two days before the start of the event. Fortunately, it was a huge success, and the prototype bearing the name of the World Rally Champion was one of the biggest attractions.
