A playthrough of LJN's 1993 license-based action platformer for the Super Nintrndo, The Incredible Crash Dummies.

I've said it before, and I'll say it here and now: I never understood the appeal of the Incredible Crash Dummies. I thought that the toys were dumb and I never bothered to read the comics, so the only familiarity I had with the characters was through the TV commercials that promoted seat-belt safety. In other words, I have no idea whether or not the SNES game is faithful to the characters it is based on.

The game is a standard left-to-right platformer in which you have to wade through droves of bad guys in order to take on, and take down, the big bad Junkman. You can attack by jumping on an enemy's head or by winging a wrench at it, and whenever you take damage, you lose body parts a la Plok. If you're out of limbs and take another hit, it's curtains for Slick.

The game looks nice - it's very bright and cartoony - and I genuinely laughed at a few of the ridiculously corny cutscenes that bookend each stage. The levels fly by at a surprisingly fast clip, and the game runs smoothly and without hiccups, but it tends to move a bit too fast for it's own good at times. Enemies will often appear out of nowhere and give you very little time to react before they collide with you, and this is extremely frustrating - the only way to reliably avoid these types of ambushes is to either walk very slowly or to memorize where the enemies will appear. The collision detection is also a bit suspect, so you will often take damage from jumping on an enemy, even when it appears that you'd landed directly on the top of their heads. These issues aren't game breaking, and it compensates by being generous with items, but these things certainly make the game less fun that it might've otherwise been.

Incredible Crash Dummies isn't a bad game - I actually had a fair amount of fun with it - but it is thoroughly mediocre. Of course, being developed by Gray Matter and published by LJN, I wouldn't blame you for expecting it to be completely terrible. It's actually quite a miracle that it isn't! It pales in comparison to the excellent NES game, though, and on the SNES there are plenty of better alternatives. Back in the day this would've made for a worthwhile weekend rental, but that's about it.
