The Japanese have succeeded in producing artificial blood that covers all blood types.
A group of scientists in Japan has developed a new artificial blood that can be used safely in all blood types. This artificial blood can fill a serious gap in emergency health interventions, war zones and regions without adequate health infrastructure.
Artificial blood is created by wrapping red blood cells and platelets produced in a laboratory environment with microscopic synthetic bubbles. This structure can perform the basic functions of real blood such as oxygen transport and clotting.
While traditional blood products require a cold chain and have a short shelf life, this artificial blood can be stored at room temperature for more than a year. This feature makes artificial blood a critical solution especially for hospitals, ambulances and field clinics.
In situations where urgent intervention is required, such as traffic accidents, natural disasters and war, it enables rapid intervention without waiting for blood type compatibility. The development team states that this innovation could lead to a radical change in blood transfusion processes.
The elimination of the need for blood type matching will facilitate blood supply and transfusion in remote and inadequately infrastructural areas. In addition, complications experienced in wrong blood type transfusions will be prevented.
The product is currently in the clinical trial phase. If the trials are completed successfully; it is expected that artificial blood will become standard equipment in a wide range of areas from hospital emergency rooms to military units and even space missions.
