For the first time in the world, a UAV was shot down in active combat with a laser weapon.
Modern warfare technologies are rapidly changing the situation on the field. Israel-based Rafael Advanced Defense Systems announced that for the first time in history, a high-energy laser weapon was used to neutralize enemy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in real combat conditions. This development shows that laser weapons are no longer in the science fiction universe and are starting to play an active role on the battlefield.
Lasers are becoming the new face of war
The roots of laser technologies in the military field date back to the 1960s. Shortly after the invention of the first laser, scientists began to investigate the combat potential of these light-based systems. By the end of the Vietnam War, lasers were actively used as target designators and distance measurement tools.
The "dazzler" type lasers deployed by the British Royal Navy in the Falklands War in 1982 aimed to temporarily disrupt the vision of enemy pilots and reduce missile and bomb hit rates. However, these systems did not have direct destruction capabilities.
At this point, the Israeli army has used a high-energy laser system with direct destructive power in warfare for the first time in history. It has been reported that more than 40 UAVs have been neutralized with this system to date. It is stated that the wings of the UAVs that are attacked are virtually burned off and rendered ineffective. This proves that lasers can no longer be used solely as passive defense but as a direct offensive tool.
The Israeli Ministry of Defense has also shared with the public images showing two different laser systems directly targeting fixed-wing UAVs, cutting their wings and bringing them down.
It has not been announced exactly where and when the engagement took place. However, it is estimated that the operation took place against Hezbollah in the regions close to the Gaza and Egyptian borders as part of Israel's "Swords of Iron" operation.
Was the weapon used an Iron Beam?
Israel's most striking project in this field, the Iron Beam system, is currently in the process of being integrated into the field by the Air Defense Command of the Israeli Air Force. Although it has not been confirmed whether the laser system used is the 100-kilowatt Iron Beam, it was announced that the system in question is capable of eliminating such threats with its 7-10 kilometer range. In December 2022, Rafael and Lockheed Martin announced a joint effort to establish a laser defense system based on the Iron Beam project.
It has an incredible cost advantage
Laser weapons are extremely low-cost compared to traditional air defense systems. For example, Israel's Iron Dome system costs between $50,000 and $100,000 per missile launch.
