In this excerpt from the review of The Japanese RPG Guide, I talk about why fans of the genre should own the book, how it helps you learn about new games, and how the book covers each title.
Role-playing video games, which were adapted to computers from their pen-and-paper ancestors, have been around since the dawn of digital gaming. Despite their initial similarities to Western games, Japanese production began to dramatically diverge, drawing inspiration from their own culture and art, resulting in a style of gameplay that often differs greatly from its Western counterpart. This book explores the long history of Japanese role-playing games from 8-bit microcomputers to the greatest hits of the modern era, including Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Megami Tensei, and Pokémon. In addition to articles on the genre, its music, and art, it includes reviews of over 600 games spanning a wide range of subgenres, including strategy RPGs like Fire Emblem; roguelikes like Mystery Dungeon; and first-person dungeon crawlers like Etrian Odyssey.
Thanks to Heroes de Papel for providing a copy of the book for this review.
