The Last Of Us 2 - Chronological Edit Movie Alternate Version (Non-Canon - Check Description)
►Original Movie Version with ALL scenes and default structure - https://youtu.be/J8GvIgbYvYk
► Please read 1st to get an idea of what this project is about:
I liked the premise and story of TLoU2, but couldn't help wondering throughout how it might have flowed if it wasn't told in 2 distinct halves, and had been a bit shorter. I chatted about this with some people from my community, and found plenty of people who were also curious (special thanks to KH-mixerX and nirog). As such, after a lot of discussion and feedback I've changed the structure of the story so that Abby and Ellie's days flow more in sequence and chronologically. We all know the story already, and I wanted to play around with a bit of a "what if?" kind of situation when it comes to the structure and total runtime. Treat this less as a "trying to fix TLoU2" and more of a "what could have been another interesting way to present the story and how can we chip away/restructure what exists in the story to offer a different viewing experience?". I think of this as akin to fan-fiction, it is not a totally canon telling of the story, it is a different presentation with slightly different outcomes.
What's important to note I think is that even if you watch this and think it might be "better" than how it was presented in the game, having the luxury of only sharing it as a movie and not as a playable game I think can greatly affect how you edit and pace a story. What works in movie format may not work at all as a playable game, and is another reason why this is more of a thought experiment and alternate way to experience the story and not intended to supersede the game itself. When you strip down a 30 hour gaming experience that was presented in 2 clear halves as a movie, it opens up some more opportunities for experimentation. This project was the result of that.
A quick note: If you expect a drastic change at the end, that's not what will happen here. If, for example you want Abby to die in this edit, it just doesn't work with the scenes and story that we have. If you'd like to create your own edit where she does and it doesn't look like a parody then drop me a link when you :) The ending IS a little different from the original game, but it's not trying to rewrite the entire story, so if you wanted to watch this to potentially see Abby get taken out, I can save you the time. But if you can live with that not changing, I think it's worth seeing how it all flows and turns out.
General Movie notes:
►What's included? - This is a playthrough of game with a deliberate attempt made to play in a cinematic way. That means traversing/fighting/editing in a way that tries to feel immersive and not so much like the game is being played, but a film being watched. It focuses on the main story and will exclude almost all optional content and collectibles, barring specific situations like the acoustic cover of "Take On Me" that appears in the game as an optional scene. I played with the HUD disabled and the aiming reticle on minimal. There are some HUD prompts that I couldn't remove, some of them you cannot hide as they are needed for timing and such. The camera unfortunately does not rotate 360 while moving so I can't have my usual front:back shots, as the character will always face away from the camera. I did my best to find cutting points that didn't feel too jarring and still showed progress. This game is very long (30 hours) and I did my best to condense it down while still keeping it as a complete experience that wasn't literally a mashup of cutscenes. You get to see plenty of gameplay and enjoy the environments/dialogue as well.
►Subtitles - There are no subtitles in this movie version because I am unable to edit things in a way that works while they are there. I often need to change around dialogue during gameplay to hide certain things and get the pacing right. Subtitles would mess up these moments. I also use tricks to try and hide visual elements when I can and again subtitles would be affected by these because they are hard coded. The game is just too long for me to type up 10 hours worth of subtitles and upload them alongside the video unfortunately. Apologies to those who need them, and I usually try to have them in but this time I chose to go without.
