The Last of Us 2 Review (Spoiler Free)
When you create a game that has no expectations and it leaves a lasting impression like The Last of Us did on the PS3, it creates a problematic situation, one where it becomes near impossible to top what some would have considered a perfect game.
The Last of Us Part 2 unintentionally created its own biggest challenge and depending on your experience with the game you may have walked away happy or upset upon completion.
The gameplay brings a welcomed evolution to the recipe that worked with the original. This evolution made the game far more enjoyable for myself especially after what I felt was a boring experience game play wise with the original the last of us. There are many weapons to use and a robust set of skills to compliment the available weapons making playing the game an enjoyable experience.
Naughty Dog has done and will continue to do an incredible job with the graphics and animations of their games. At times scenes look photo realistic that had me stating out loud “wow that looks realistic” wether it be related to the environments, characters or the way their bodies animated specifically with the facial animations.
What compliments the presentation of the last of us part 2 even more was just how believable the voice acting was. Ellie and other characters play their roles exceptionally well making me feel that immersion that many games miss. The music also added an extra layer to the scenes that just made everything that much more impactful.
While the last of us part 2 is a linear experience it surprisingly has you exploring buildings and reading letters left behind that are completely unrelated to the main story of the game. I found these letters to be engaging and it made the world feel a bit bigger than it otherwise would have felt. Naturally we have collectibles, safes to unlock and more that I wont mention as to keep this review as spoiler free as possible. The game does have a new game + so if you do want to experience the game again you can continue your character progression.
Finally I want to discuss the story which is really the defining factor for most on wether they enjoyed the game. The story puts you in very uncomfortable positions that make you question the actions of the characters, you remain on the edge of your seat wondering just what could take place next and without a doubt the game throws many twists at the player that I personally didn’t find predictable which made it just that much more impactful. Ultimately I found the ending unsatisfying but the journey intense and without experiencing the entire game I wouldn’t have felt as positively about the overall story as I did.
With that said I score The Last of Us Part 2 an 8.3/10 and feel while it is a divisive game it is one that should be experienced by those who enjoyed the first entry.
