The story is over, and I'm left with a lot of thoughts swirling around in my head. In a string of more in-depth discussions recently on the channel, I try to break down what I made of TLoU2 upon completion.
I talk about things that I really liked, and ways in which it surpassed the original, but also areas of the story and choices that negatively impacted my experience. Whether you loved the game or not, or somewhere in between like me, thank you all so much for taking the time to watch this. It was not an easy game to play in many ways, and not an easy game to watch. If you loved it my frustrations about the story likely annoyed you, and if you hated the game, well, you hated the game. But part of sharing your experiences with the world is that you're going to undoubtedly have thoughts and feelings at odds with your viewers.
I did my best to clearly present what I thought, and to consider both sides of a situation if I didn't like it. I think they use phrases like "you didn't like the story because it wasn't what YOU wanted" to detract from critics, but I did my best to make it clear that it wasn't necessarily about that, but the way in which they arrived at their conclusions. This could still have been a story I didn't "want", but that I loved overall regardless. Alas, it wasn't.
Based on tens of people I've spoken with a lot of people feel generally similar to me, loved aspects, disliked others, ended up feeling like a 7-8/10 sorta game, with a minority either thinking it was total trash or one of the best games of all time. The polls I did on my social media also averaged out at that sort of result. The "haters" and the "masterpiece" groups seemed to cancel each other out leaving a general majority of people who thought as I did. Maybe not for exactly the same reasons, but it was interesting to chat about it with people in a respectful and productive way. The general public discourse around this game on places like twitter was mostly terrible from what I saw. But in more private arenas like DMs and Discord etc, much more respectful, productive and thought provoking conversations could be had. I've never experienced a release like this before, and I think for me that will actually be the game's greatest legacy.
