Here it is, the story of The Last of Us: Part II, edited into 6 movies. This video will look best on an HDR display, using an HDR compatible youtube app, but I've also made sure to customize the SDR downconversion to look great as well.

If you're unfamiliar with my work, what I do is I take the stories of video games and edit them into movies. The goal is to make sure more people are able to experience these great stories like I have. Whether you've played the game or not, I try to condense the story into a watchable movie format as much as possible. I want to make sure it's entertaining and understandable whether you're a gamer or not.

One of the ways I do this is by removing as many on screen indicators that you're watching a video game as possible. I believe I have been completely successful in these movies. Thankfully, TLOU2 gives the players plenty of options to disable many of the HUD elements, but there were still plenty of things that remained that I needed to remove using VFX, so it was still a lengthy process, especially with how long this story turned out. I even went as far as to remove some sound effects like the "optional dialogue" sound, although some game sounds were too frequent to do this for.

Normally with my game movies, I try to edit the gameplay down as much as possible, and there was definitely some of that here, but it turned out to be pretty difficult, because the game crams so much story dialogue into the gameplay moments, and so much of those gameplay moments themselves are critical to understanding and enjoying the story. What I ended up mostly focusing on was finding smooth paths through the levels, which often required practicing and replaying so much of the game that I basically rerecorded the entire game after my first cut of this project. Those who saw my early access version of this project on Patreon will have seen almost entirely different gameplay. Many gameplay sections splice together 2 or 3 different attempts, and if you have a keen eye, you may notice the weapons on the character's back changing mid-animation, which I was able to pull off by matching animation frames precisely, so that the transition would be very difficult to notice, resulting in nearly seamless gameplay.

There were a few larger sections of the game I was able to completely cut, and maybe there could have been a little more, but the primary way I shortened the gameplay was by avoiding doing any exploring, just going directly forward through the level, and replaying multiple times so that I was able to move through the levels in a way that felt both natural, entertaining, and efficient wherever possible. I did customize the difficulty to allow for some challenge while reducing challenge in other areas, in order to make finding the ideal run easier, as the AI can get particularly difficult in the game, especially when you have next to no HUD and you haven't been exploring to gather supplies. I did have auto-pickup enabled, but what you see me pick up is basically the entirety of what I had in my inventory. I also had to be tactical and sparse in where I would craft so that it wouldn't be seen on screen when I edit. Because of these things I often needed to start most combat encounters attempting stealth, much like a player would need to do on higher difficulties, but I also made sure to include direct action where it felt appropriate for the character and story (although having a,ple ammo and supplies in those scenarios became an issue I had to navigate by replaying using an earlier NG+ save)

So this was a massive project, much larger than I was anticipating going into it. I hope you enjoy these movies. If you want to support what I do, the best way is always to subscribe and share my content, and Youtube Premium helps a lot too. If you'd like to support my channel even further though, I have a Patreon page here:

I offer behind the scenes production diaries, including release date estimates while I'm working on the projects, and if you support at higher levels I also offer full quality downloads of my movies, including HDR downloads for the highest tier as well as access to early cuts of my movies, before post production begins.

And as always, if you like this movie, please consider supporting the developers and buy the game if you can!
