The Last of Us is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, so it’s a perfect time to celebrate Joel and Ellie’s survival horror video game masterpiece with a jam-packed retrospective analysis! Shep becomes fully invested in the The Last of Us’ endearing, tragic storyline packed with amazing characters. In addition to Joel and Ellie, we become attached to Tess, Sam, Henry and a whole host of other memorable personalities. Shep is amazed at the visual splendor of The Last of Us, not just in the high fidelity, but in the world it creates, with amazing, simulated versions of Boston, Salt Lake City and a plethora of natural, unique environments which all help tell The Last of Us’ story. The retrospective digs into the thoughts and feelings of the cordyceps outbreak survivors, most of whom tragically perished. To endure and survive The Last of Us’ world, crafting, exploring and shooting are all requisite skills that are honed and implemented perfectly, and retrospectively, this is a winning formula that still hasn’t been improved since. Shep also acknowledges the wealth of bonus content, including the Factions online multiplayer mode, that many different types of players can play and enjoy, as well as the Left Behind DLC, which features Ellie and Riley in a beautifully told character centric tale of love and survival.

While it was definitely a struggle, in this retrospective Shep is able to find a couple outlier faults that slightly tarnish The Last of Us. There’s tons of tedious puzzle solving and progression, using repetitive tools like planks, pallets and ladders. The game also suffers from a distinct lack of climactic boss encounters, which is surprising considering the mutated enemies that are obviously prevalent in The Last of Us’ world.

Join Shep as he comes to terms with the depressing, yet hopeful story of The Last of Us, with intriguing morality and choices that are still talked about today. Bask in all of the well-deserved Hits, and laugh at a few surprising misses, in this huge retrospective of The Last of Us!
