The Legend of Tianding – Taiwanese Picaresque - No Commentary Gameplay – IDC Plays
0Before we dive into the review of The Legend of Tianding, it should be noted that all cultures have their myths, historical heroes and legends. We’re used to hearing stories about King Arthur, Hercules, Genghis Khan... But few people will have heard of Liao Tianding, a Taiwanese rogue considered the Robin Hood of his land, fighting against the abuse of the rich or those favoured by the government in favour of the common people.
The game is set at the start of the 20th century and is divided into several chapters that tell the story of the young hero's different exploits in a fairly linear development, although with some extra paths where we can find collectibles and items once we have some skill. The way it is told is quite appropriate and helps us immerse ourselves in the story.
Combat is based on martial arts using one button for attacking, another for disarming and a third for stamina-consuming special arts. The speed of combat is very fast (without being frenetic), we can steal and use weapons from our enemies at will and perform very interesting combos, even using elements of the scenery to make it easier for us. It can be said that this is a very well executed oriental version of the combat system offered by Guacamelee.
In addition, we have two difficulties, and in one of them the margin of error is minimal, which helps a lot to make it playable for a wider audience. Therefore, we find very interesting fights that are adapted to our level and, among them, the fights against the bosses stand out as they force us to learn their patterns in order to succeed and not have to repeat from the last save.
Otherwise, we have platforming areas where we have to dodge traps, use a grappling hook to move and even use attack moves to get further (something to keep in mind).
The format for cinematics, HUD and other elements is taken directly from a comic book, and this is something we normally see in the form of vignettes. But it doesn't stop there, and the game itself maintains this aesthetic at all times. This is one of its strengths, although the limited variety of NPCs works against it. The voices are in the original language (including the narrator's) and help a lot with the ambience, which is also provided by the music.
To conclude, it must be said that The Legend of Tianding is a 6+ hour adventure with very interesting combat and a presentation that knows how to make its mark, but it has parts that slow down the exciting pace that the platforming and fighting give us (especially the fact of exploring the city and the "necessary" presentations for each chapter).
