The Legend of Zelda (NES) Retrospective | Wide Open World
The Legend of Zelda is a hard game to introduce. After Pokémon and Mario, Zelda is probably the most ubiquitous gaming franchise out there. Despite this, its ancient roots are somewhat forgotten- sure people recognize it from a glance and the series would occasionally have some sprites from it- like in Hyrule warriors, but largely you see the Zelda canon starting at Ocarina of Time for the general public- everyone has played a little of the original Mario, The Legend of Zelda doesn't feel like it's in the same boat. The game has a bit of a reputation as obtuse… difficult… a bit clumsy… and that reputation isn't exactly unwarranted, but it has led to the game being left as a mystical, ancient artifact- everyone is aware of the legend but few have actually gone through with getting to the bottom of it. Zelda initially released in the US in 1987- although it's interesting to note it's Japanese release a year prior was for the Famicom Disk System exclusively, an add-on that used floppy disks that had slightly better specs than the base console, including a 6th sound channel for slightly better music, 20% even, as well as uh, religious references. Since then, the game has pretty steadily seen rereleases- the Satellaview had a remake called BS Legend of Zelda- it's a lot to explain but being a SNES thing, it looks nicer, the Gamecube had a promotional disc that is quite rare, The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition which had an emulation of the game with an improved translation to fix some of the uh, strange wording, it was kinda including as one of the emulatable NES games in Animal Crossing, although it's only available by hacking, the Classic NES Series on GBA had a port, the Virtual Consoles on Wii, 3DS, and Wii U all offered it, the NES Classic Edition had it as well, and lastly, of course, was one of the first games added to Switch Online's NES pile and one of like 6 games people would want to play
