3DS, 2011. Rating: 4 out of 4 stars

It’s hard to overstate how influential Ocarina is. Much like Super Mario 64, Final Fantasy VII, and other early 3D games of that era, it created a feeling of epic scope that gamers had never seen before. It’s hard to come back at this with fresh eyes as a result. Luckily, even with the technology creaking a little, Ocarina is still as masterful today as it was then.

The story structure follows A Link to the Past’s general blueprint, but it adds more depth to the supporting characters and gives real dimension to the dungeons and the enemies. The bosses are enormous and intimidating, the enemies can be really nasty and force the gamer to strategize. There are tons of secrets ranging from heart pieces to skulltulas to statues that talk. Very little feels out of place or feels overwhelming to the gamer, which is something future Zeldas sometimes struggle with. The game’s range overwhelms everything else. Not here. Everything runs like clockwork and is masterfully designed and executed.

3DS Version: The 3DS remake wisely sticks to the script and delivers a near copy-paste job. There are a few minor additions here and there and some new bits of dialogue to be found. In general, though, they didn’t need to mess with success. Nintendo got it right the first time. That said, the upgrade to 30 fps is a welcome one and making the iron and hover boots items rather than gear is a nice quality of life change. Same with making the ocarina part of the touchscreen. The button changes for the songs are a bit aggravating, though. No matter what version you play, Ocarina of Time is a seminal game and one of the very finest in the series’ history.
