The Mario Kart franchise hasn’t changed much over the years, which has been a strength and weakness. Likewise, since the N64 version, the game has emphasized chaos to make it more fun in a casual setting. Again, a strength and weakness. Mario Kart 7 certainly feels the tug in both directions with some very imaginative courses. Music Park is my particular favorite because it’s a track that balances the setting with the chaos without calling too much attention to itself. Other tracks, particularly in the Special Cup, often go too far in the opposite direction, which can lead to frustration.

There aren’t too many new ideas other than a few items such as the fire flower and a raccoon tail and the ability to use seven items in a row. The glider is a prominent new feature and it does open up the racetracks in some interesting and unexpected ways. The 16 original tracks certainly put it to good use. I suspect the 16 retro tracks chosen for Mario Kart 7 were ones that would utilize the glider feature very well.

It's not a surprise, then, that the Wii version fares the best. The courses are well-chosen and have a nice variety to them. The Nintendo DS pick are decent, though I wish Waluigi Pinball were replaced with something else. The N64 has fairly safe choices from early in the game and the SNES version gets two very good choices. Ditto GameCube, which might have the second-best roster even with only two choices. The GBA easily fares the worst with only one selection and it’s one of the blander choices from Super Circuit.

That high and low summary pretty well categorizes Mario Kart 7. It’s well-made, fun and has decent depth with several characters and features to unlock throughout the game. However, the courses are a little too all over the place in terms of quality and its emphasis on chaos rather than skill is a problem. Mario Kart, as a franchise, has done better.
