The Legend of Zelda - Skyward Sword HD - Part 9
So adding to my insane backlog, I've decided to attempt the Zelda timeline. One of the greatest series to ever grace the world of video games, spanning almost 40 years - and what an impact it has left. And we start with Skyward Sword, a game that until now has passed me by.
Our hero, Link, starts off in Skyloft. A floating tranquil village where everyone knows one another. After winning out a challenge to pass a final exam to become a knight, he and his childhood friend Zelda are slapped out of the sky onto the ancient surface world - one they regarded as a myth. They're separated, and Link sets off on a quest to rescue Zelda whilst under threat of the resurrection of the mysterious and evil Demise (who wants to enslave everyone and anything because of course he does).
Skyward bridges the gap between the 3D era started with OOT and the Open World era of BOYW and TOTK really well, and we start to see some mechanics that would remain or be refined here, such as the stamina wheel that will limit how long you can attack, run or climb before tiring yourself out - which added a Dark Souls lite aspect to combat and made certain traversal off limits or challenging. As with every game in the Zelda series, the story and sound are spot on, but dungeon design is second to none and will have you racking your brain until the eureka moment and satisfaction kick in. There are plenty of fun gadgets to use and upgrade too. That's before we mention engaging boss fights and wonderful minigames (Clown Nonce)
Unfortunately what seems to bog Skyward down is the mixed bag control system - whether the nunchucks or the switch pro pad, using some items or camera control choices whilst sometimes innovative and intuitive can be downright frustrating. The game can also suffer from uninteresting side quests. These are somewhat minor gripes, but if better refined like BOTW then it would have scored more.
