My research focuses on the problems of reconstruction and visualization of three-dimensional objects from images or video streams. I envision the an end-to-end light portal that can capture and re-enact real-world objects or events in a different time or space, as if they were being tele-ported right in front of the viewers. While a full realization of such a light-portal is many years away, I will present some progresses we have made during the last few years. More specifically, I will talk about a novel 3D display architecture that utilizes an array of projectors and microlens screens to emit a large collection of controllable light rays to create illusion of 3D without glasses. In addition I will show some results from some of the world's fastest and best stereo algorithms we have developed and discuss to extend 3D reconstruction to non-diffuse materials. If time permits, I will also present some of my related work in tele-collaboration and large format displays.
