The Virtual Boy was a short lived attempt at a Virtual Reality gimmick by Nintendo. It was rushed to market in 1995 in an unfinished state so Nintendo could put all their efforts into the Nintendo 64.
They went with the all red display due to costs and also because testing proved that color wasn't providing proper field of depth. It was also originally going to be head mounted with head tracking, but that was axed due to concerns over motion sickness.
It would then go on to sell less than a million units, Nintendo's biggest failure. It had only 14 games released in America and was discontinued mere months after it's release.
