The Old Guard 2 Interview: Director Discusses the Final Scene and a Third Film in the Franchise
The Old Guard was one of the best action movies of 2020. A fast-paced blockbuster with both style and substance, director Gina Prince-Bythewood smashed expectations with a film that waltzed to an impressive 80% critics' score and 70% audience rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The movie won several awards and earned many more nominations, with Prince-Bythewood walking away from the NAACP Image Awards with the trophy for Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture.
Alas, Prince-Bythewood would not return to direct the second installment, The Old Guard 2, instead passing the torch to the talented Victoria Mahoney on only her second effort behind the camera. However, with such veteran performers in front of it, including Charlize Theron, Matthias Schoenaerts, Henry Golding, Uma Thurman, Kiki Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and more, Mahoney had some of the very best actors ready to turn her vision into a reality. "It's a team effort," Mahoney admits, adding, "You know, there were nine producers on this movie. They all care about the movie."
The Old Guard 2 follows Theron's Andy as she grapples with mortality in the wake of the first-ever immortal emerging, threatening the world as we know it. Ahead of its Netflix premiere, Collider's Steve Weintraub sat with Mahoney to discuss the sequel, including the impressive balance between emotional character beats and all-out action, the movie's exciting cliffhanger ending, and who would win in a fight between Theron's Andy and Christopher Lambert's Connor MacLeod from Highlander.
