Outlast is a 2013 survival horror video game renowned as a classic in the genre. Using the basic mechanics of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Outlast places the player in the shoes of Miles Upshur; an independent journalist attempting to uncover the truth behind Mount Massive Asylum for the Criminally Insane. Determined to prove that the Murkoff Corporation, which owns Mount Massive Asylum, is hiding internal corruption, Miles Upshur breaks into Mount Massive Asylum. Things, however, quickly go awry; as Miles discovers that Murkoff has been experimenting on patients. The patients have recently escaped and believe that Miles is a doctor that they must pull out their revenge upon. Locked in with no exit in sight, Miles must use stealth to evade the patients. If they DO see him, though, he will be forced to run through the tight corridors of the asylum; coming up with plans on the fly. Can Miles escape? What is the horrifying truth behind Mount Massive? What was Murkoff looking for in dream therapy? Find out this and more in this thrilling survival horror title.

Outlast: Whistleblower continues the horror when the player is cast as Waylon Park, the whistleblower responsible for leading Miles Upshur to Mount Massive Asylum. After his boss Jeremy Blaire discovers the file Waylon sent to Miles, he forces Waylon to join Project Walrider... but as a patient! Things once again go wrong when Billy Hope ascends, allowing the Walrider to escape captivity and release the Variants to go on their murderous rampages. Waylon also manages to escape the Morphogenic Engine and attempts to escape. Along the way, he meets Frank Manera the cannibal, Chris Walker from the original game, and the terrifying Eddie Gluskin named "The Groom." Waylon escapes the clutches of all three and escapes Mount Massive Asylum only to be attacked by Blaire. The Walrider, however, kills Blaire, allowing Waylon enough time to enter Miles' Jeep and escape to leak the truth of Mount Massive to the entire world.

Outlast 2 takes the horror into the outdoors. Investigative reporter Lynn Langermann and her husband/cameraman Blake Langermann are investigating the mysterious death by lead poison of a young girl. However, a mysterious bright light takes out their helicopter's engine, causing it to crash. Blakes is knocked out, but when he comes to he discovers the pilot to be skinned and hung on a pole and Lynn nowhere to be found. Nearby, he encounters a small village and searches for Lynn only to discover that the inhabitants of Temple Gate believe that his wife is carrying the Antichrist. Lynn and Blake somehow escape the rough hands of the cult only to be attacked by another cult called the Heretics. The Heretics take Lynn and leave Blake behind. Determined to save his wife, Blake ventures further into Temple Gate. The Testament of the New Ezekiel, which is the cult inhabiting Temple Gate, relentlessly hunt for Blake but fail in catching him. After discovering that the Heretics took his wife to the far-off mines, Blake leaves the Testament but happens across another cult called the Scalled. Believing him to be their Messiah who is going to cure them of their syphilis, the Scalled leaders Nick and Laird crucify Blake and bury him alive, but he manages to escape the cult, killing Nick and Laird along the way. Along the way to the mines, Blake encounters the bright light several more times, each time being teleported into his past in a strange Catholic school where he is chased by a demon. Blake manages to evade the demon and some Heretics before entering the mines, where the Heretics begin hunting him non-stop in an attempt to stop him from rescuing Lynn. They fail and are taken by surprise by the Testament, who mercilessly slaughter the Heretics. Blake escapes the mines and rescues Lynn, who births a baby who may be either real or fantasy. Blake passes out, but comes to and makes a last attempt at escape, only to be bathed in light.

The Outlast Trials is an upcoming title in the Outlast series. Taking place in the Cold War, Red Barrels recently released an Outlast Trials teaser trailer. It appears that players will be wearing night-vision goggles and will be tasked with helping each other escape the horrors they are all experiencing which may be hallucinations generated by the night-vision goggles. The Outlast Trials will be both singleplayer and multiplayer depending on your preference. Freedom ends in 2021.
