Betty Ford was the 38th First Lady of the United States. Her husband, Gerald Ford became president in 1974 after Richard Nixon issued his resignation. As First Lady, she was outspoken when it came to women's issues and social policy.

She enjoyed high approval ratings during her husband's term in office. Conservatives weren't a fan of her moderate and liberal leanings, but she amassed quite the following anyways. She helped raise awareness for breast cancer and the pressing need for women to perform self-exams.
She was a passionate supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment, supported abortion rights, and became a leader in the women's rights movement. She also helped raise awareness for addiction and alcoholism when she announced her own struggle with substance abuse in the late 70s.
