The People's Game: How Football Lost It's Way & How We Could Win It Back!
16The Premier League is touted as the greatest league in the world, and we are told as football fans that you have to pay to maintain this level of quality.
It is held up as a justification for why the divisions beneath are starved of resources, why clubs are always gouging fans, and why so much of English football exists beyond a paywall.
As a socialist, and a lifelong football fan, this just doesn’t ring true.
We fans watch as billionaires buy our clubs to massage their egos, to raise their profile, to extract an income or event to sportswash the reputation of states responsible for atrocities…and we wonder…how did it all come to this?
…and how do we change it?
In this video essay, I examine how and why we came to have a Premier League in the first place, how club ownership has changed over the last half century or so, examine whether the Premier League really is the best in the world after hoovering up all that money, and then make some suggestions as to how a left vision of English Football might look.
I am by no means an expert, but I have tried to reference materials that support my views and suggestions, and I hope that despite the abuse that will no doubt come from raising my head above the parapet in the world of football coverage youtube, there will be some worthy discussions to be had.
