Video games have come a long way. From Atari’s Pong all the way to God of War Ragnarok, video games are more immersive than ever before. But what happens when you go back and play a game that you fondly remember, 10, 20 or even 30 years ago? Is it exactly how you remember or is it different somehow? Can we ever relive the past?

What if your favorite game gets a remaster? My favorite game Legend of Mana for the Sony Playstation got a remake. I spent countless hours playing it, the game makes me feel like a kid again. The music from legend of Mana is the same composer who did the music on super Mario RPG which was my favorite game growing up as a kid. So when Legend of Mana was remastered for the PlayStation 4 I was excited to replay the game . But the experience was different. While the game looks tremendous and has huge quality of life changes it just feels not quite the same . Sometimes games are a huge improvement from a remaster and sometimes they feel really off.

And that made me think that maybe we’re misremembering the games. Maybe nostalgia clouds our experience with old Sony,Nintendo, Atari or Sega Games.
