PSP UMDs are unique when compared to other game media. Unique in the fact that that is by far the worst way to play the games, yet some games are only officially available in this medium.

Enter PSP modding and well over a decade of playing games via ISO files on the PSP memory card. Unlike on the 3DS where games perform the same no matter if played from SD or cartridge, in the case of the PSP the UMD is slower, louder, and all-around a worse experience.

It's just one of many proprietary issues that the hacking community has had to overcome in regard to the aging handheld.
