The Psychological Side of Roblox
On the front page of Roblox, there are tons of games that have addicting formulas. They reward the player for playing the game, and ask them for free Robux at every opportunity. And this doesn't sit just within Roblox; there are plenty of youtube videos being made to this day that offer Robux hacks or Robux glitches, offering the viewer Free Robux for no reason at all, and they're all 100% scams. Children might be downloading a virus for some in-game currency, compromising information or their entire system for a piece of clothing in the catalog.
Roblox isn't entirely bad, of course. I'm not saying it is. There are, actually, some really cool, amazing parts of it that are wholly beneficial. But there are a lot of scummy and underhanded practices that prey on children. And some of those children might pass on the torch to others, ensuring a relentless cycle, both social, financial, and even more...
Whatever flavor of the month game is out, you can count on it that Roblox instantly has a knock-off version for free, designed for kids that can't afford that new shiny game their parents won't buy them.
And what about adult games? Mature games? There are certainly some games and themes that children shouldn't be subjected to. Don't even get me started on voice chat. If you allow your child voice chat so that they can talk to some strangers and be influenced by them, that's on you.
Maybe this over-monetization, lootbox, gambling is just part of gaming overall. Call of Duty does it. Bigger studios and developers do it, all the time, because it works. There was that big lawsuit or debate a few years ago, about whether or not lootboxes and micro-transactions were considered gambling. Were they? In any case, some studios had to tone it down, for fear of it escalating to a bigger issue.
To be truly clear, it really is gambling. Whether or not a judge or lawyer will say so is different. But we know the difference. Kids will bug their parents relentlessly just so they can buy those sweet 500 Robux for that new clothing item, or that new game that's practically begging for Robux to support their tired devs.
All of this is a greedy cycle, and it should be stopped, but it won't.
