Rising from the ochre sands like a scar in the earth, the Ember Vault of Gorthar is the last standing monolith of the Virekan Flamehold, a civilization that mastered geothermal energy thousands of cycles ago. This ancient tower—its stone once obsidian black—is now scorched by rust and irradiated minerals, a side effect of the core-boring technology they buried deep beneath it.

The Virekans lived in near-total isolation, choosing the dry calderas of Tharaxis for their proximity to the Vaultline, the planetary fault that radiated unstable heat signatures. The Ember Vault was both their temple and their power center—housing the Pyroth Engine, a fusion device that, according to scattered glyphs, could split tectonic seams to release usable energy.

But the Virekan obsession with power turned catastrophic. A misalignment in the Pyroth Engine is believed to have triggered the Cracking, a deep planetary quake that buried the Virekan cities and fractured the Vaultline itself. Only the Ember Vault remained above sand, its door sealed by melted stone, its secrets fossilized in ash.
