After disassembling my Macintosh SE to check if replacing the hard drive were even an option, I discovered that the hard drive took that as an invitation to finally head through death's door. I decided to investigate the problem further, to make sure it really was a dead drive and not a bad cable or something else, and try to recover the drive with a low-level format. It was all in vain, as the drive never came back to life.
