Garry's Mod is an absolute mess of a game. Every time I decide to replay it I am reminded why I both love and hate it. This is my journey through a server, beginning to end, watching the Rise and Fall of a Garry's Mod Server.

Anybody who has played Garry's Mod has likely had this experience.
Every game starts the same; finding a purpose. Why are we here, and who is here with us? This is what I like to call Chapter 0. Not every game will be fun, but that is a risk every player takes when they join a server When I joined, my first hour was spent running around getting killed at a spawn turned jungle by a group of players wearing conical hats, wielding AK-47's, who kept typing "go home G.I." in chat. This is a group that had found their purpose. They had hit their peak, and soon after, they all left. Behind them lay the server in the form of a quiet, bleak wasteland.

Chapter 1 is the first point of interest; The Rise. This can take anywhere to a few hours, or a few minutes, and is generally brought on by direct player interaction. My purpose was found in a man named Hopeless. Not long after our first meeting we began a dialog, and through that dialog more players began to join. Hopeless, Mik, and Delta had helped the server blossom into a more vocal and entertaining place. Most spawn-killings had stopped as the server moved towards a more friendly semi-creative atmosphere.

Chapter 2 starts around the time a new player joins. More often than not, somebody will join a game with the pure intent of being the most edgy, annoying, and hated person on the server. They can come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and voices, but will always oust themselves as the antagonist near immediately. Our antagonist was found in a 12 year old LUA Hacker, RIP_VARIX. The coming of RIP brought our closed group closer than ever through shear arrogance and annoyance. RIP had managed to derive spite from every active player through initial comments made in chat, and once he spoke he had carved his own stone. Everybody instantaneously became a squad of trained Navy S.Q.U.E.A.L.S. Even Delta, who was mostly quiet until this point, and the underdog of the server, James, managed to sneak a few shots into RIP, while all RIP had managed to do was make perpetual clicking noises in our ears through his expensive chat spam script. This all took place just as the server began reaching its new peak.

Chapter 3: Ben Shapiro. Most servers will have a "Ben Shapiro". There is no good way to condense them down because you never know who it could be. The one constant of every good Ben is their staunch form of Chaos. When our Ben joined he was silent. He did not move or speak, and then he completely throws spawn into back into war as he draws a sword and begins attacking everybody around him. Everything begins to calm back down as RIP starts talking again; reminding everybody of their purpose. Ben is allowed into the Group of Super Friends as he begins speaking; "Get a life, RIP_VARIX. Get a life". Another important trait of a good Ben is their natural ability to blend in. Our Ben had blended and assimilated himself into the group with absolute ease. Chapter 3 was the perfect peak, as it was the point where most players where active, there was collaberation amongst all of us, and we managed to obtain the perfect Ben.

Chapter 4 is when it all comes tumbling down. In my opinion, the main players of the server where Hopeless, Mik, RIP, Ben, and James. RIP had finally had enough of our relentless fire, and retreats. With the fall of RIP_VARIX brings the fall of the Group of Super Friends. First James, then Mik and Hopeless. James returns, but he and Delta have gone near mute, making Ben the last remaining draw of the server. Chaos and violence spreads into spawn once more. Prop spam and murder became common place while Ben campaigned over the louds speakers of gm_bigcity. Everybody left had been too interested in the spam at spawn that nobody noticed the silent exit of Ben Shapiro. I think the descent was in its final, fullest state once Ben Shapiro disconnects. Nobody noticed until he was long gone, as we realized the server had gone quiet. No more explosions, no more squealing tires, no more loud speaker announcements. The server had reached its death and rebirth once more. My work was done, so I leave too.

Strangers is the secret chapter that many feel after a party dies. After everybody is gone, and the lights go out. After all the fun to be had has been, and you're left alone to the future. You'll probably think of all the great people you met and all the entertaining things you did. You'll wonder where they are now, and if you'll ever meet them again. All you've got now is the distant memory of what was now then.
