In this part, we explore Pewter City and battle the Rock-Type Gym Leader, Brock. In order to access his gym however, we need a Grass or Water Type in our party (you can find Bellsprout early on in the game on Route 2 if you need it. You need it to access the Gym, but it doesn't have to participate in battles). While backtracking for a Bellsprout, we also finally encounter a Beedrill in the Viridian Forest and catch it. Back in Pewter Gym, we win and get the Boulder Badge. Afterwards, we battle our way through Route 3, catch an Ekans, and arrive at the Mt. Moon Pokémon Center where we optionally buy the earliest Magikarp.
