The city of Trier is considered the oldest city in Germany. Dating back before the Romans, it even housed one of the Roman emperors after the fall of Rome. But in the days of the Holy Roman Empire, the city of Trier was one of seven cities to house an Archbishop. These seven archbishops were responsible for the election of the Holy Roman Emperor.
With the death of Otto von Ziegenhain in 1430, Ulrich von Manderschied, a wealthy German noble, sought to take the seat of Archbishop for his own. However, another noble by the name of Jakob von Sierck was also running for Archbishop and the two candidates went to Rome for Papal approval. Suprisingly, the pope elected neither one and decided in favour of Rabbi von Helmstatt as the new Archbishop of Trier.
While Ulrich's opponent accepted this decision, Ulrich did not. With the aid of the cathedral chapter and some of the Electors, Ulrich appointed himself Archbishop. This resulted in his excommunication from the Catholic church. However, many of the Electors supported his position until 1436... that is, except for the city of Trier. They openly defied his right to rule. Because of this, Ulrich was furious and ordered the city to be captured and forced to acknowledge his title.
Ulrich sieged the city in 1432, but failed miserably. But Ulrich's wrath would not be pacified. He mortgaged off most of his estates, borrowed money from the church and a few nobles, and raised another army to besiege Trier 1 year later.
We find ourselves here at this point in time, with Ulrich and his army ready to assault Trier, and finally claim his right to rule as Archbishop of Trier.....
