If one type of element bending technique has remained mysterious in the Avatar universe, it’s sandbending. The bending art only used by the Si Wong Tribes has rarely left the desert's borders. While sand won’t be found in as much quantity elsewhere as in the Si Wong desert, it’s still quite a common rock that can be found pretty much everywhere. The problem is while bending a grain of sand is child’s play, controlling thousands at the same time requires a very particular set of skills.

Not only did we just encounter sandbending with the Si Wong Tribes, but we barely saw what sandbending would look like during a battle. There is so little we know about the sub-elemental bending technique, and yet so much potential. A sandbender warrior could create sandstorms, harden thousands of grains of sand into a spear and shoot it right at their enemy, and even create a form of glass which could make sandbending quite the dangerous bending art. But would sandbenders adopt the way earthbenders traditionally fight? To some extent, I think so, but since sand has to be treated in terms of flow, I think their fighting technique would be situated somewhere between the grounded earthbending way, and the push and pull technique of waterbenders.

In today’s Avatar: The Last Airbender video, I will talk about sandbending, explore how it works, what are its common uses, and its relationship with jing. Now, hop on your sand-sailers and let’s get started!
