Richard Carleton attends the annual conference of the Society of American Magicians in Tampa, Florida. Carleton, himself an amateur magician, tempts fate with the old guillotine routine; and meets two Russians, who specialise in 'the reverse golden handshake', relieving staff and guests alike of their watches, ballpoint pens etc. Taking the brunt of these tricksters is Natalie, who works in the hotel delicatessen. By Day Four of the Convention, even Carleton is confident enough to try his skills, and manages to outwit the hapless Natalie (1990).
