The Simpsons Game (PS3) — Part 1: Bartman Begins
Welcome to my playthrough of The Simpsons Game, a mostly forgotten platformer from 2007 that I'm playing on the PlayStation 3. The whole gang's here — Homer, Bart, Lisa, Marge, and Maggie — with the show's voice cast reprising their roles for a seemingly endless stream of in-game banter.
In this episode, Bart sneaks off to buy the hot new video game, Grand Theft Scratchy, but his plans are thwarted when Marge confiscates it, standing firm against violent video games. Just as Bart is lamenting his loss, a mysterious video game manual falls from the sky, revealing that he and his family have special powers! Bart channels his inner Bartman to thwart some mischievous bullies at the museum, Homer devours his way to victory in an eating contest, Lisa puts a stop to Mr. Burns’ destructive deforestation, and Marge rallies the townsfolk to ban violent video games.
Along the way, the game takes aim at the video game industry, offering a meta experience where every level is packed with references, jokes, and critiques of bad video game design. In other words, it's a video game about video games that "ironically" replicates all the bad video game tropes. It's like a room full of lampshades without a fourth wall in sight.
If you're a fan of The Simpsons or just love watching someone who's not very good at platformers play a platformer, you won't want to miss this. Don't forget to hit that like button, drop a comment, and subscribe for more Simpsons shenanigans and other gaming goodness!
