19The State of the Gaming Industry Amidst AAA Dominance and Cultural Debates
Financially, I have never been better, and still, I do not have the feeling I want to purchase any new games during the Steam Spring Sale.
Still, I probably have too much to play anyways. I think this is exactly what is going on right now in our favorite hobby. As I expected for some years now, indie, A, and AA games fail to attract consumers. Only AAA games have a decent chance to win the wallets and hearts of gamers.
The consequence is this massive crash we see at the moment in the gaming industry, especially in the AA European market. Layoffs, restructuring programs, canceled projects, divestments, and simply a shrinking of the overall gaming industry. All under the looming production boost of AI, if it would work.
Also, it is no wonder that in this heated atmosphere, the SweetbabyInc "debate" surged. Consultancies and journalists fear for their future. Gamers are fed up with some policy decisions that expanded slowly but steadily over recent years, in AA and especially AAA games.
Now, the overall funds dry up, meaning companies lay off diversity managers in particular, stop paying for outside consultancy, equally affecting gaming news media that rely on the popularity of gaming and advertisement. Networks support each other, fair enough. The back office of the gaming industry (writers, consultants, journalists) knows each other too well and defend to the teeth the status quo ante crash. Some gamers, not all obviously, I would even say most do not care, get mad, get angry and feel like the industry is failing them.
But do not worry, the gaming industry will emerge stronger than ever; it's difficult to say whether more or less ideologically left or right. But certainly, as always, serving the recent trend attempting to mirror society and culture wars. Stay strong. Do not get distracted on your path, whether you like it or not. You are responsible for yourself.
