Apollo 15 was the fourth manned mission in the Apollo program, launched on July 26, 1971. The crew consisted of Commander David Scott, Command Module Pilot Alfred Worden, and Lunar Module Pilot James Irwin. The mission was notable for being the first to include the Lunar Roving Vehicle, which allowed the astronauts to cover a greater distance on the lunar surface. The mission lasted 12 days and the crew spent almost 72 hours on the moon, gathering 77 pounds of lunar rock and soil. The mission was a success and helped to further advance the capabilities of the Apollo program and the United States' dominance in the Space Race.
