The Nintendo Switch has taken the world by storm. It has already sold more units than the Wii U did in its entire lifetime and, according to the most recent and readily available data, it is currently on pace to either tie or break the Wii’s sales record— a feat truly worth praise. Everyone is excited by this console and, more specifically, it has penetrated two markets that analysts didn’t expect it to find much success: the non-gamers and hard-core gamers.
Now, when the broad public thinks of Nintendo, they inevitably think of the Japanese gaming company that is known for its family friendly content and fun “cartoony” art style. Rarely do they think of gore, intense action sequences or massive open world sandbox games. This perception led to many thinking that the Switch would merely succeed with the “casual” and “family” crowds. After all, the DS has sold over 150 million units and was primarily marketed to kids and fans of Nintendo’s previous titles and innovations, why wouldn’t it work for the Switch? And it did, the Switch has been remarkably successful in all demographics and categories, however, there is much more to the console’s success.
